Inception

What is wrong with Inception? I’ve been thinking about this immediately after the movie ended and I'm still not sure. Something is lacking. It’s not a bad movie, in fact I think it’s good. But something or the lack of something about the movie is bugging me. Walking out from the cinema I wasn’t fully satisfied when I really should be, because the movie was good, the acting was good, the story was good…still I wasn’t satisfied. There is SOMETHING missing..

I first saw the Inception trailer on Star Online and immediately I wanted to watch it because it is similar to ‘Dark City’, a movie I really like (I watched Dark City way back when I was studying in Arau). Then I found out Inception is Christopher Nolan’s and I was completely sold. He is my favorite director, and The Prestige and of course the Dark Knight are my favorite movies of his.

Another reason I really wanted to watch this movie was because of Leonardo DiCaprio. For me he is a brilliant actor and very underrated as well. I’m a fan of his since ‘The Beach’ and I cannot understand how some people still cannot see the brilliant actor that he is. Criminally underrated.

Inception is like the Italian Job or Ocean’s Eleven (or twelfth/thirteen/thousand), the difference is the gang of inception do their ‘conning’ through dreams. Interesting idea, though not the ‘original idea’ some of the critics would like you to believe. Matrix used the idea before and I’m sure there are a few other movies that have used the idea as well. Basically the movie is about messing with people’s minds to get to your goal.

My eyes were glued to the screen for the entire duration of the movie. It was just so absorbing, so intense. It was intelligent and the details Christ Nolan put into the movie was amazing.

I’m not going to say much more about it because the less you know the better. I was just too excited and read quite a few reviews and that turned out to be a mistake.I went into the cinema with a really high expectation; in the end Inception fell a bit short and I can’t help but feeling disappointed. A pity really, I should be happy with the quality of the movie.

Like I said earlier I can’t quite put my finger on exactly what is wrong but it probably the combination of a few things. One certain factor is the sucky seat I had in the cinema. I got the couple seat and I was really looking forward to cuddling with my gf while enjoying the movie but all I got in the end was a serious back pain. Calling the seat a ‘couple seat’ has got to be a cruel joke because we had to stay as far apart as possible just to be comfortable. Seating on it for almost 3 hours was no laughing matter. Such a pain!

The high expectation I had of course didn’t help. Reading the reviews, the words used to describe Inception were over the top. ‘Insanely intelligent, ‘mind boggling concept’, and the most ridiculous ‘the best movie ever’ were some of the descriptions used. To me, the movie is intelligent but saying it's insanely intelligent and calling Christ Nolan a genius because of it do not seem right. He's a genius alright, but not because of Inception. Mind boggling concept? Like I said lots have used the idea before, Christ Nolan merely put his own spin on it. Best movie ever? Sigh, it is not even the best Christ Nolan movie. Definitely not as good as The Prestige and Dark Knight.

The problem is though, most of the reviews I read were from a forum I really trusted and often agrees with when it comes to movies. I’m still scratching my head on this, how can I see Inception very differently from them? Did I miss anything from the movie? Do I not understand it? Am I not intelligent enough to understand it?

Or maybe, since this is a Christ Nolan movie, everybody wants this movie to be so good they failed to see it as it is...

The more I think about it the more I feel the problem with Inception is the storytelling. Apart from the intensity, it fails to connect with me through its characters (except for Dom Cobb). It also fails to go deeper on the conflicts and the problems as it is so fast paced (but at the same time the fast pace carries the intensity very well). Basically the movie focuses too much on Dom Cobb and neglects the rest. It could have gone deeper into the relationship between Fischer Jr and his dad, but it doesn’t. And for Ariadne, hmm, she is so underused to me (again, not going into details here, I don’t want this review to be a spoiler).

So after all my comments, how can I still say it’s a good movie? Well that’s because I keep thinking about it until now, and that’s the mark of a good movie. The intensity stays with you long after you left the cinema. It will keep occupying your mind even after you sleep on it. Inception does all that to me. And the reason I keep thinking about it is the ending. For me, they did the ending perfectly. It’s not just one of those endings where they leave the possibility of a sequel wide open, Inception ending actually dictates the whole story. How you see certain characters and happenings in the movie depends on how you interpret the ending.

By and large Inception is a good movie, one of the best I've seen this year actually. It's just the over the top reviews almost ruined it for me. Although it is not quite the instant classic some made it out to be, I am probably going to give it another watch. I'm definitely recommending this movie to everyone. Go watch it.

Uda & Dara The Musical 2010

I paid RM60 (RM63 if I count the tax) just to sit in an uncomfortable chair for 3 hours, watching a bunch of people screaming meaningless words, failing at their attempt to be poetic, singing terrible songs and dancing unrhythmically. Then, I get to see how in the old days Malay couple used to date in the woods and have sex there.

That’s what I can sum up about Uda & Dara The Musical 2010 (UDTM) I watched last night. That story was supposed to be a tragic tale of love and tragic conflict between the rich and the poor. Unfortunately I did not get any of those from the play. I didn’t see anything that showed how strong the love is between Uda and Dara. I did not see enough hatred and tension between the rich and poor. I just can’t feel it. All I saw were horny young couple getting it on in the woods and an angry young man starting a riot because he got turned down by his girlfriend’s parents. It was a poor interpretation of the Uda & Dara tale, and an even poorer presentation of the story.

The poem above, Gadis Di Kuburan, was the ‘birth’ of this tale. Usman Awang published that poem in 1953, and in 1956 it was turned into a short story titled Uda & Dara. Since then, countless adaptations of this tale have been done into dramas, plays, etc.

Those earlier adaptations must have been really good for the story to stay famous and relevant till this day. I cannot say the same about this latest adaptation though.

The biggest pull for me to watch this play was Rahim Razali. He is the director, and this is not the first time he directs Uda & Dara. So what could go wrong, right? It’s Rahim Razali, a big name in local theater circuit, directing a play he directed before. Risk free.

Boy, how wrong was I!

I don’t know if there is anything worse than corny lines and corny scenes between two lovers. Basically that’s all the play was about, corny embarrassing scenes and lines. The opening scene that normally sets the tone of any play was bad, but because it’s Rahim Razali’s I quietly told myself to bare with it, it will get better as it go on. Turned out I was extremely deluded, and the only time I clapped during the play was at the end of the opening scene. After that my hands were too busy covering my face in embarrassment.

The romantic scenes made me cringe. The supposedly poetic lines and dialogues left me scratching my head. The action and movement of the actors were way over the top even for a theater, and often not in sync with the dialogues; random meaningless movements. The singing was below average (except for Misha Omar, as expected). The dance choreography was average at best and the dancers looked like they didn’t have enough practice.

The prop change between the scenes was a mess as well. I can’t pinpoint what was wrong with it exactly (I’m no expert of course), but I have never noticed the prop change in a play as much as I noticed it last night. They were slow and it was too obvious; it was painful waiting for them to be done with the prop change at the end of every scene. Unprofessional and disorganized if you like.

The glitch of the background during the opening scene of the show was unforgivable. Mistakes happen, that’s normal. However, the time they took to fix it was unacceptable. I actually felt like climbing up to the control panel (which was just behind me) to help them out with it, that’s how slow it was for them to react. Again, very unprofessional.

Now, the storyline. Like I said earlier, I don’t get it. I simply don’t.

Uda loves Dara, Dara loves Uda. Uda is a man’s man, Dara is the talk of the village. Uda is poor, Dara is spanking rich. So far so good, simple and straightforward.

Let’s continue.

Uda and Dara often date in the woods somewhere. Their date routine seemed to always be the same. Dara will be at the place first. Uda will always be late. Then Dara will get fed up having to wait for Uda everytime. Only then will Uda make his grand entrance. Hiding behind the trees, he will start singing. Dara will be surprised to hear Uda’s voice and starts looking frantically for Uda. She always fails. Uda then will show himself to Dara, emerging from behind the trees. Dara will smile and then they will hold hands.

Ok. Annoying, but ok nonetheless.

They talk about their love. “Abang sayang Dara.” “Dara sayang abang.” That kind of stuff. They talk about getting married. Their plans for the future. And that’s it. That’s all they have to show for their supposedly unbreakable love. No other problems or happenings to lead to the biggest obstacle of their love, the conflict between the rich and poor. It was just not enough to convince me of their love. Their love is the core of this tale, I think they should have put more emphasis on this.

On to the next big issue of the tale, rich vs poor. Nobles vs peasants.

They did try to show how arrogant and cruel the rich and the nobles can be, and just how humble and dignified the poor are. However, again, it was just not enough. Maybe it was the dialogue? The acting? The directing? All of that? I really don’t know. Whatever they were, in the end, Uda and his friends who were supposed to be the good guys came out looking like bitter thugs themselves. They didn’t get what they wanted so the only answer was to “PERANG!” Whyyyyy? Because Uda’s proposal was turned down by Dara’s mum? Way to go the good guys!

I don’t get it!

On to the sex scene. Yup you read that right, sex scene. Never in my wildest dream I would hope to see live sex scene in our country. Sigh.

Ok I’m being unfair there. That scene was supposed to be a beautiful symbolic show of true love between Uda & Dara. (I’m not going into right or wrong argument so save it). That scene was supposed to make you (girls) go “awww”. But like everything else in the play, it was very poorly executed. They had this group of dancers with ‘selendang’ dancing a ballet like dance, the lights were change to beautiful romantic mode, and the music was soft… Still, it went bad. The couple looked like a couple practicing Kamasutra moves. Embarrassing!

I could probably go on and on with this. I could probably think of another 100 reasons why I think the play was terrible. I’m not going to do that though. It’s enough to say that Uda & Dara The Musical 2010 (UDTM) is unfortunate enough to be THE ONLY bad play I have ever seen in my life. Admittedly, I don’t go to that many plays but amongst the plays I’ve seen is Impak Maksima, and I thought it was ok. This goes to show that I don’t have a high standard and I’m not hard to please at all, but still UDTM failed, big time.

I’m so disappointed with Rahim Razali and I hope he can bounce back from this.

Or maybe I’m just not cultured enough to appreciate UDTM. If that’s the case, I sincerely apologise.

The Kite Runner

I wonder if anyone else read this book thinking if there is a little bit of Amir inside of them. Well I did, and I think Khaled Hosseini did an amazing job on Amir’s character. That boy exists, he was real!

The Kite Runner is the first novel by Khaled Hosseini. It has a simple storyline really, about how a boy growing up in a tough place, about his relationship with his dad and his relationship with his best friend. What makes it stand out is how Amir perceive things. The way he thinks and reacts, what he feels and fears. That for me made the book special.

It is amazing that Kite Runner is the writer’s first novel because of the depth of the story. However, compared to his second novel A Thousand Splendid Suns (TSS), Kite Runner is very raw. Raw in the style and the way the story move from chapter to chapter can be quite ‘crude’. But this is not to say it being raw affected the story. This book is excellent.

How does Kite Runner compare to TSS? TSS for me is a story of sad tragedy and Kite Runner is a scary, terrifying tragedy. While TSS has better flow to the plot and story, Kite Runner moves faster.

I used the words 'masterful gripping story' to describe TSS, the same words apply to The Kite Runner. A must read.

Can’t wait for Khaled Hosseini’s third novel.

High School Musical – The Ice Tour

I watched High School Musical (HSM) last weekend.

“I got tickets for all of you for High School Musical on 16/8.” That was my along’s sms, sent to all of us.

The idea was to take the kids to watch it. My nieces and my nephew are all crazy about HSM, it was unreal. Especially the two older girls, age 6 & 7. They memorise not just all the songs but even the dialogs as well. So my along got the tickets. But instead of just taking the kids, lets get everyone to join. Even my mum and dad. Great, a fun family outing. I don’t have any problems with it. Forget that none of us (except the kids obviously) knew anything about it. It will be fun!

But then we got a problem.

I suddenly remembered that the new season of football was starting on the same day.

“Can I give HSM a miss instead? Sigh, I can’t do that, the tickets cost so much!”

So for the first time in years, I will have to miss the opening game of the season. I was so looking forward to it but now I will have to miss it! For a show that I know nothing about!

“But it’s ok. Watching the kids enjoying themselves will be worth it.”

Then another problem came up.

My along, the one who initiated the plan can’t go. She had to travel. Bummer! What the hell? This is not fair. If I had to suffer, she has to as well!

“That’s ok lah. Watching the kids enjoying themselves will be worth it.”

But then we had another problem! The biggest blow of them all. The kids can’t go!

Apparently, for my two older nieces, their aunty from their mum’s side had tickets for them as well. Different show time but on the same day! And their aunty booked them first. So now, the two girls, the reason we were all going to the show won’t be there! Nice!

But we did go. My younger niece and his even younger brother love HSM too. They won’t understand much but they will enjoy the songs, the fancy lighting, the jumping & spinning.

Well, I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. All the songs were freakingly familiar. I have no idea how I knew the songs, but I did. There were nothing special with the skating though, and the lighting show itself wasn’t impressive. For me they totally depended on the brand hype, the popularity of HSM the movie.

But the kids enjoyed it very much and I guess that is what matters. So if you can, just catch the show for your kids’ sake. HSM is big, it’s the ‘in’ thing. Don’t deny your kids the show just because you knew nothing about it. I’m glad we didn’t.

Oh yeah, I did get to see my football game. We got back just in time for it.
And we ended up wasting two tickets. Can't find anyone to tag along at the last minute. What a pity!

A Thousand Splendid Suns

I’m an idiot. I knew from the very beginning when I read the synopsis, I should not read this book. But I did. I knew this book will make me depressed and still I went ahead and read it. Now I’m all miserable and angry. Now I’m paying for my idiocy.

I mentioned this book, ‘A Thousand Splendid Suns’ (TSS) by Khaled Hosseini, in my review of ‘The Summer of Secrets’. Even back then when I chose to read ‘Summer of Secrets’ first I knew that TSS is one of those books that will make you feel hapless and hopeless. But I also knew then that TSS is going to be superb, gripping & masterful, and that’s why I read it. And I’m right on both accounts; it is a masterful gripping story, and it made me feel hapless and hopeless.

TSS tells a story about two women, Mariam first then Laila, how they live their life in Afghanistan, how they struggles against the discriminations women faced there. TSS is also about how they survive the wars; war against The Russian, against the Mujahideen themselves and then against the Taliban.

As I flipped through the pages of TSS, I realised that I need to do something so it won’t be too depressing for me. So I decided to cushion the impact by reading it bit by bit, just to make me less attached to the story. It didn’t work at all. The author was just too good in capturing and describing the misery suffered by the two characters. And the author made an excellent job too in capturing the stupidity and cruelty of those men who claimed they were just abiding to the Islamic laws in their cruelty.

I said above that apart from being miserable, I also felt angry. I felt angry thinking how stupid some people can make Islam looks like, and to think they claim they were only doing God’s wish. Though TSS was fictional, the story in it was based on real events. It happened before, it’s happening now and it will continue in the future. I felt scared as well. Some people just never had the chance, the odds were against them from the beginning. No matter what they do, it will never be good enough. No matter how hard they tried, in the end it will mean nothing. I just hope I wont be one of them.

So please read ‘A Thousand Splendid Suns’. Definitely worth the money and time. You won’t regret it.

And by the way, this book did make me cry. In that one part, I just can’t hold it back. Stupid book!

The Summer of Secrets

My Along recently stole* a few new books so now I have a queue of books waiting for me to read. I’m quite excited about all those books because my interest in reading is back, maybe it’s because at the moment I can’t stop writing so in a way that re-ignite my reading habit.

Out of those books, there were two that really caught my eyes. One of them was ‘A Thousand Splendid Suns’ by Khaled Hosseini who previously wrote ‘The Kite Runner’. I haven’t read ‘The Kite Runner’ but heard good things about it so naturally it made me want to read ‘A Thousands Splendid Sun’. But I said there were two books, the other one was ‘The Summer of Secrets’, and I chose to read that first despite not knowing anything about the author.

‘The Summer of Secrets’, by Martina Reily, with a pleasing cover just seemed to be the lighter readings out of those two, that’s why I decided to read it first. It told the story of three friends, Hope, Julie & Adam, who live in London and how turn of events led them to a holiday at Hope’s hometown in Ireland, a place called Dunport. There, their friendship got closer than ever as they revealed their secrets to each other. The story was told from Hope’s point of view, her traumas, her problematic relationship with her mum and her dark past, and that somehow brought the best out of her friends.

What I like about the book is as usual the light, easy language used. That is most important to me. If I found the words ‘thee’ & ‘thy’ in the book I’m reading, I will throw it away.

The author also injects a lot of humour and clever dialogs & banters all through out. I laughed a lot reading this book, from the start right to the end because the jokes and banters were fresh and original. Also the characters were realistic, and I can relate to them, especially Adam and Logan (another main character in the book).

My favourite part of the book was when the three of them went to have lunch with the much feared, Julie’s Dad. It was hilarious with Adam had to put on his brave face and thick skin just to try to actually be part of the lunch itself.

And I like the ending part of the book where Hope had to do the things she meant to do. Clearly the author put plenty of effort in there and she did it really, really well. I have a feeling that she actually wrote the ending first before writing the rest of the book. This is one of those books where the ending was predictable and clear from the very start, so that just make the work harder for the author. But like I said she did it well and surely many readers will cry at the ending.

I’m definitely recommending this book to everyone. Go and read it!

* Yes, my along steals books! It’s her bad habit. She makes lots of money but still steals. Don’t ask me, I can’t understand it as well!

A Summer To Die

I like reading but I’m not a big fan of books. I mean I enjoy reading and often just like everyone else, when I read a good book I will tend to forget the world around me. It’s just that I hardly ever buy any books. The books I read were always someone else’s and I don’t spend time at bookstore or surfing the net to look for the latest bestseller. People will recommend and lend their books to me (or buy it for me) and if I’m in the mood I will read it.

Everybody seems to have their favorite books, and they like to tell people about them. Well I’m going to jump on the bandwagon now. So here it comes, my first official book review on the record.

One of the first books that really stick to my mind was ‘A Summer To Die’, by Lois Lowry. That was the first book that she wrote. I didn’t know who she was then, it was the cover of the book that made me want to read it. Don’t know why, but the blurry drawing looked interesting to me.

Apparently Lois Lowry is a famous children/young adults book writer. One of her books, ‘The Giver’ won an award that I can’t be bothered to look up for in the net right now. That book was for some reason banned from some school. Why? Look it up yourself!

Back to “A Summer To Die”. It was about 2 sisters, Meg & Molly who differs in everything; the way they look, the way they look at things and the way people look at them. It’s hard enough for them to move to a new place, going to new school, meeting new people but for them to have their love hate relationship just made it more interesting.

What do I like about ‘A Summer To Die’?

The book can make you laugh and cry at the same time and I mean it literally (I didn’t cry though). With things happening to their life, Meg, the younger of the sisters was forced to mature up quicker then she should and Molly was forced to let go of the life that she dreamt of. The story is told from Meg point of view, her childish but intelligent mind was the focus of the story. The language was simple, the story fast flowing and cleverly written with light sense of humor all through out.

The beginning of the book caught my attention immediately. The book started with Meg watching in shock as Molly drew up a line with a chalk, wall to wall, separating the bedroom they share. “Now you can be as much of a slob you want on your side of the room,” said Molly (or something like that).

My favorite part of the book is when Meg woke up in the middle of the night, sensing something terrible was happening. I remembered being scared reading it.
Another one is ‘the eating peas’ scene. When Meg suddenly burst into tears I almost cried (again, I didn’t).

So go and look for this book. Entertaining light reading and yet it will make you change the views you have on some of the things in your life.

Pity I lost this book, I would have read it for the umpteenth times right now…

Why So Serious?

Imagine a guy forcefully grabbing you by your neck and then pulling you closer until your face is just inches away from his.
Imagine him with a face of an innocent mime, except that the make up is worn out & messy and the face is full of scars.
Imagine him talking in a voice that holds all the rage and grudge deep inside, telling you how his sadistic dad carved the long scars either side of his lips just so he will smile forever.
Then imagine him sticking a knife deep between your lips, asking;
WHY SO SERIOUS?!

Erghh, tried my best there. I was trying to capture the creepiness of The Joker in the Dark Knight. Definately not my best work...

Anyway, do you remember how annoying Joker can get in the previous Batman movies and cartoons? Well he is not annoying anymore, he is downright scary!

I watched The Dark Knight last night and it was awesome! Even the high expectation I had for the movie didn’t ruin it. It was truly awesome! To think that someone can take a cartoon character and then make a deep tight movie out of it is just amazing. I think Spiderman started the trend of adding more human value to a superhero, but this version of Batman just took it to another level altogether.

The directing, acting, script and plot were all worthy of a good proper character based movie. The fight scenes, the special effects and CGIs were all worthy of a summer ‘kick-ass’ blockbuster movie. And Christopher Nolan managed to combine both qualities with aplomb. Well done!

I’m not going to talk about the movie in great details, I’m not up to it right now. All I can say is go watch it. BY FAR the best movie I’ve watched this year!

Summer Movies 2008

“You’re a movie slut,” said a friend to me.
Hmm, I’m not really. It’s just this past few months I’ve been going to the movie a lot. I need something to do to fill my time. Since I’m not that adventurous, watching movies seems to be the safe option.

Every year Hollywood will focus on the summer as it is their most bankable season. They market this part of the year as ‘Summer movies’ time, taking advantage of the holiday. So they packed all the fun, easygoing, light entertainment movie during it. It’s working well for me as football is in hibernation, so movies as replacement to football make a lot of sense.

I can’t really remember every movie that I have watch so far but what I can say is it hasn’t been up to the expectation. The number of times I walked out of the cinema thinking ‘wow that was worth RM50 I spent tonight’ was far in between. And so far only 1 movie that I can classed as an instant classic, and even then I’m a little bit bias for a reason I’m going to tell later.

In my head I categorised movies into 4;
1- Instant Classic
2- Really good and worth my RM50
3- Just okay
4- Crap

‘Instant' Classic movie
So far it is only Ironman. Robert Downey Jr was really good plus a comeback by Gwyneth, good funny script, great CGI, great action sequence etc2. I think Robert Downey Jr really nailed ‘Tony Stark’ character. Anyway, I wouldn’t have put it under instant classic movie normally but I have a very good reason in doing so.
It was because she said 'Ironman' reminds her of me!!! Woohoo! I'm a superhero! **smug, evil proud laugh, smug**

Really Good movie
I have 3 movies under this one;
1- What happened in Vegas – really good romantic comedy for me. I laughed from start to finish. Ashton Kutcher and Cameron Diaz worked well together.
2- KungFu Panda – I’m so glad that I watched this movie. John Black was excellent, and it was refreshing to see an animation moving away from depending on cute lovable character.
3- Drillbit Taylor – now not many will know about this movie. And maybe watching it with low expectation helped a bit. If anything watching the fat kid alone was worth the time. The fat kid in that movie reminded me of the fat kid in ‘Superbad’.

Just Okay movie
Lots of movies under this one.
1- Made of Honor - corny
2- Hancock – V disappointing
3- Hulk – better than I thought it would be
4- Forbidden Kingdom – good to see Jackie Chan and Jet Li together

6- Fool’s Gold – Kate Hudson is not that cute anymore :-(
7- Hellboy – a lot better than I expected actually. Would have made the ‘Really Good’ movie if it didn’t drag a little in the middle part of the story.
8- Street King – ‘The Shield’ wannabe. Never ever try to copy the excellent ‘Shield’ because you will look stupid. Don’t even try it!

Crap movie
1- Indiana Jones – really really very utterly disappointing! Shia Lebouf has never ever been that bad. Harrison Ford in that movie was a poor man’s Tommy Lee Jones. The script and action was corny, stupid and predictable. I shook my head at least 3 times while watching it. During the ridiculous monkey tarzan scene, not only I shook my head, I slapped my forehead really hard, had my face in my hands and let out a very loud sigh. I even felt embarrassed watching it!
2- That Kevin Bacon movie – I can’t even remember the title as it was just terrible!

So the movies have not been that good so far, only 1 classic. I’m sure I forgot to mention a few other movies but I just can’t think anymore. The memory of Indiana Jones ruined it all.

However, tomorrow I’m going to see a movie that I have really high hope for. From what I’ve heard so far it is going to be an instant classic. Step up The Dark Night!

Oh and also I wanna watch Zohan. Hope Adam Sandler got it right….
